Najib: Those who lied about police brutality to be punished

ALOR SETAR - Those who had lied and made outrageous claims about alleged police brutality during the recent illegal Bersih 2.0 rally will be brought to court, said the Prime Minister.

“If the proof is clear and serious, the Attorney-General will make the decision soon,” Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said at a press conference after attending a youth gathering in Pendang near here yesterday.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, who also attended the function, said “clear cut” cases would be dealt with first.

On the six Parti Sosialis Malaysia members detained under the Emergency Ordinance, he said he would be meeting them soon to see whether reports that one of them had gone on a hunger strike was true.

“If they don’t pose a threat to national security, appropriate action will be taken,” said Hishammuddin.

On another matter, Najib said PAS’ rejection of the plan by the Election Commission to introduce the biometric system proved the party would reject any suggestion made by the Government to improve the electoral system.

He added that if the Government had proposed using indelible ink, the opposition party would also find reasons to reject it.

Najib said indelible ink also had flaws, as it could be bought from other sources and used during an election which resulted in many people not being able to cast their votes.

On his knee injury suffered during his younger days as the Youth and Sports Minister playing football with Super Mokh (the late Mokhtar Dahari), Najib said he would be going for surgery on Monday at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The Prime Minister said doctors told him he would be out of commission for about three days.

“The doctors say it is not an elaborate operation. After that I will go back to the office,” he added.
