A few non-governmental organisations today urged S Ambiga and her group to cancel without any pre-conditions their illegal street demonstrations planned for Saturday and heed the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's call to preserve peace and harmony.
All were in agreement with his His Majesty's special statement on Sunday that street demonstrations brought more bad than good although the original intention was good.
Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) president Ibrahim Ali said Ambiga's request for a royal audience with the King on the matter was a publicity stunt to “pull wool over the people's eyes” so that her group could claim that they had won the 'war'.
“Why must the Agong meet such a group? The group (led by Ambiga) is an illegal body and seeking an audience with the king should not be welcomed.
“It will also set a bad precedent and make a mockery of the royal institution,” he told Bernama in Kuala Lumpur today.
Ibrahim had said yesterday that apart from heeding the call by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Sultan of Pahang not to hold street demonstrations, Perkasa's planned counter-rally to oppose Ambiga's would still depend on whether Ambiga would carry on with the illegal assembly.
“Now we would like to see how loyal Ambiga and the members of her group are to the king. Uphold the principle of Rukun Negara or else she and here gang are traitors to the nation. Call off the illegal demonstrations without any conditions,” he said.
Gagasan Pendidikan Melayu Malaysia (Gagasan) secretary-general Syed Anuar Syed Mohamad said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's statement was timely and proved that the king had the people's well-being at heart.
“Gagasan urges all parties to obey the king. He does not condone street demonstrations as a way of resolving issues,” he said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur.
He also added that Ambiga should be stripped of her Datuk title if she carried on with the illegal assembly.
It was reported yesterday that Ambiga, chairman of the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih), had requested for a royal audience with His Majesty, saying the group was prepared to cancel the illegal assembly if the king were to order them to do so.
Selayang 4B Youth chairman Roslan Basaruddin said, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's address was equal to a ruling and must be obeyed by the people.
'Ambiga being used by third party'
“Ambiga understands the king's statement but she is being used by a third party. Their true agenda is not to seek a clean election process but to create chaos,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.
Malaysian Association of Youth Clubs (MAYC) president Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi said the king's advice must be taken seriously by all parties.
“If the Agong has said demonstrations are harmful, why do they need to have one. His Majesty's message is clear and I think it is not necessary for Ambiga to have the audience,” he said.
