Kampong Baru Development Corporation bill passed

Kampong Baru Development Corporation bill passed

KUALA LUMPUR - Opposition Members of Parliament today failed to block the Kampong Baru Development Corporation 2011 Bill from being passed through a vote by division.

The voting requested by the opposition itself saw 72 members of Parliament supporting while only 28 opposed its proposed second reading.

The vote by division was carried out after Datuk Dr Hatta Ramli (PAS-Kuala Krai) submitted a motion to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia who allowed the voting after deciding that the motion met the Proceeding Regulations which required the support of at least 15 members of Parliament.

There was a brief chaos in the house when government members rushed into the house upon hearing the bell, to fill up the quorum.

As soon as the result of the vote count was announced by Pandikar Amin, several opposition members left the hall in disappointment.

Earlier, Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin when winding up speech on the bill strongly stressed the importance of setting up a Kampong Baru Development Corporation.

He stressed that the establishment of the corporation was not meant to take away anybody's land in the area but to enable the place to be developed.

Nong Chik said the setting of the corporation was a catalyst to development and improve the status of the Malays in the area.

He said the government had approved four government-linked companies with bumiputera interest, namely Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), Lembaga Tabung Haji, Perbadanan Putrajaya and Permodalan Hartanah Berhad to ensure interests of bumiputra was protected.

The bill which was tabled for the first reading on Monday among others would set up a corporation with the responsibility of implementing the policy, directive and strategy of Kampong Baru development.

The house would continue its session Thursday.
