Tung Shin tear gas: 'PM, Home minister also responsible'

Not only the police, but prime minister Najib Razak and his Home minister Hishamuddin Hussein must also be held accountable over the firing of tear gas into the Tung Shin Hospital compound when dispersing crowd during the Bersih rally on July 9.

"If only the police were taken to task, then it is not fair. The Prime Minister and Home minister must be taken to task as well because the way they had countered the peaceful rally had been the main reason why the attack took place,” said Pokok Sena member of parliament Mahfuz Omar.

Earlier, Home ministry secretary-general Mahmood Adam admitted that the police had broken its standard operating procedure and fired tear gas and water cannon at the hospital.

Mahmood said the police personnel who were responsible would be referred to the force's disciplinary committee.

The admission came after repeated denials by the authorities that the hospital had come under tear gas attack, with Health minister Liow Tiong Lai dismissing video and photo evidences.

This was followed by a group of doctors, some of whom were working at the Tung Shin hospital, preparing to testify that the police had breached code of ethics by attacking protesters within hospital compound.

According to Mahfuz, the government's strong-arm tactic to stop the rally, strengthened by its admission yesterday of spending some RM2 million to mobilise 11,000 policemen, only showed that it was the guilty party in the whole episode.
