'Your highness, your decree's a cause of concern'

your saySultan: Insufficient evidence for prosecution in Jais raid

Lover Boy: Could Your Royal Highness tell your rakyat: what are the indications of proselytising that led Your Royal Highness to conclude that there is insufficient evidence to charge over the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC)?

As we were told, the DUMC premises were used to carry out an AIDS support programme. May we also know who the legal experts are that advised Your Royal Highness?

The decree by Your Royal Highness is cause for concern because the line between indication and actual proof are very fine indeed. Yet, the decree by Your Royal Highness that there are indications is, by itself, a common pronouncement that the church may be guilty but there is insufficient to prove guilt.

In our legal system, there seldom are grey areas - is the church guilty of proselytising or not? If there is no such evidence, then just say that it is not guilty and the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) was wrong in raiding the premises.

Louis: There were attempts to pervert the faith of Muslims during a function at the DUMC during Ramadan, according to Jais, and yet they cannot charge those offenders for lack of evidence? I am puzzled by this statement.

If there was an attempt to pervert the faith of Muslims, certainly there must be evidence pointing to the intent. I believe Jais has a lot of explanation to do.

Rick Teo: What kind of stupid decision is this? If they are guilty, prosecute them. If not, then the raid was wrong and Jais has to be brought to book. The fact that Jais could not produce any evidence only suggests that there was no evidence, but mere suspicions when they carried out the raid. And the raid was based on wrong information because there was no proselytising at all.

Hasan Ali has to be brought to account for his action in instigating the raid. He has caused enough problems and should not be selected to contest again. If he does, let us all make sure he loses his deposit.

Josephine: I wonder what led the sultan to conclude that there were attempts to pervert the faiths of the Muslims. Coming from our beloved royalty, whom we look up to for leadership and justice, the rakyat deserves a bit more than a mere statement. This is not fair to the church that was 'visited', nor was it fair on Jais.

If Muslims' faith were perverted, how come there's no evidence? If there is no evidence, how could the sultan declare as if there was? The tension between races and religious divides is tense enough, without having this kind of dangerous declaration.

Fair Mind: My God! Jais has the right to raid churches? Now Umno will go at the jugular of MB Khalid Ibrahim for apologising to the public, since Jais has the right to raid churches.

Clean & Clear: DUMC is good as declared guilty, but without the need to provide proof or allow the church a defence. I say, make the report public for refutation or examination.

Jais' report is one-sided and natural justice requires the accused to be allowed to defend.

Hollangan@henryP: It is time that church members stop their conversion mission. You can carry your godly mission in helping the needy, but don't insist on perverting their faith.

I know of many cases where church members stalk lonely housewives and convert them without the husbands' knowledge. The strategy is to use the wife to eventually convince the husband and children to convert. God's mission for you is to help with an open heart, not with hidden agenda.

MfM: The sultan has said the truth: no prosecution due to insufficient evidence. Insufficient evidence is common in many cases and this is one of them.

No party is obliged to disclose evidence of their wrongdoing, especially if implicates themselves, and I doubt DUMC would either if they knew Jais would prosecute if evidence was found.

As the sultan said, just because there isn't sufficient evidence, it does not mean something did not happen. It just means that the evidence is not sufficient to present a case in court to obtain a conviction.

The sultan has kicked the ball to DUMC and is provoking their response. Silence would be equivalent to acceptance of guilt, and speaking against the sultan would mean they are going against the head of Islam in Selangor.

This has been played well by Jais and the sultan. DUMC is caught with truly no way out. They now need to prove their innocence; rather than for Jais prove their guilt.

Anonymous_3fc0: Why is there no action against Jais? They are not above the law. All the religions are eqally important, so don't come into another religion's function and spoil the event. Jais must learn that.

Off: Even a primary school kid can understand simple logic as. If there's no evidence of conversion, then conversion could not have happened, therefore no action should have been taken. Same goes vice-versa. Is that too difficult, to swallow your pride, that is?

Just admit that Jais screwed up. Your Highness, you are not dealing with an uneducated bunch of subjects. People are smarter than what you give credit for.

Ashoka PJ: I am a Muslim and some Muslims embarrass me. Face the truth and uphold the glory of the religion. If you are wrong, have some humility to say "I am sorry". Get it over and done with. Don't let the wound fester. Now you look like bigots.

MalaysiaAustralia: And what action can be taken against Muslims who are converting others to Islam? The traffic should not be one-way.

FedUp2010: This case has nothing to do with conversion of anybody's faith. The function was a fund-raising dinner organised by a church to help those needy people regardless of faith. It had nothing to do with religion.

The function was also not held in the DUMC church but at the auditorium. Just because a function is led by a church group doesn't make it a conversion ceremony.

There are many different 'churches' here in Malaysia. The biggest in Malaysia and the world is the Roman Catholic Church and they have never resorted to blind conversions.

Anybody wanting to convert must go through a six-month programme to ensure the individual is really committed and ready. Many have failed this course as it was found that they weren't ready.

Religion is not about having huge numbers. It's about having people who follow the correct teachings. It's pointless to have one million followers if only 50 percent of them follow the right path.

In saying this, what Jais did was wrong, but sadly, the powers that be can't admit to this. Typical. - Malaysiakini
