DAP raps Soi Lek for "wild allegations" against PAS over red-paint vandalism

DAP raps Soi Lek for "wild allegations" against PAS over red-paint vandalism

DAP took MCA president Chua Soi Lek to task for making "wild allegations" that Pakatan Rakyat partner PAS was responsible for the recent vandalism of its Jalan Ampang headquarters. It also challenged Soi Lek to surrender CCTV recordings to the police to help catch the culprits.

Faced with declining popularity, Soi Lek has been accused of playing up the incident in a bid to gain public sympathy ahead of the general elections widely expected to be held within months. Soi Lek himself compounded the perception when he took care to highlight the hudud law issue he has been using to attack the Pakatan, especially PAS and DAP, with.

"The DAP unreservedly condemns the despicable and cowardly act of splashing red paint on the front doors of the MCA headquarters in Jalan Ampang on Thursday, 3 Nov 2011," Tony Pua, the DAP national publicity secretary, said in a statement.

"MCA president Chua Soi Lek should not make the wild allegation that this irresponsible act is the work of PAS supporters without an iota of evidence. Since the MCA has CCTV recording of the vandals committing the act, he should request that the police conduct immediate identification of the culprits and take further action."

Police must work harder

In recent years, there has been a surge in such attacks, including the mailing of bullets and death notes, the desecration of places of religious worship, and acts of vandalism and even arson on properties belonging to political parties or leaders.

According to Tony, these acts were the work of "cowards who clearly are unable to discuss contentious issues in a civil and rational manner."

"The police must do all it can to investigate this incident and nail the culprits, and all Malaysians have a responsibility to discourage and condemn these despicable acts against any person or party," said Tony, who is also the MP for PJ Utara.

Soi Lek, with the help of MCA newspapers and Umno-linked portals, has tried to portray himself as a 'passionate' champion against hudud - the Islamic criminal law that prescribes outrageous punishment such as stoning adulterers to death, whipping, caning, amputation of limbs and beheading for guilty Muslims.

"(There is ) speculation that this is because MCA is against PAS’ intentions to implement hudud. I am not saying this is related... this is the first time in MCA’s history that this has happened,” Soi Lek had told reporters.

In a separate incident just a day ago, red paint was sprayed at the entrance of the Bar Council office in Jalan Lebuh Pasar in Kuala Lumpur. An unidentified man vandalised the stairs and the side of the building with red paint spray before riding off on a motorcycle with an accomplice.

“We believe this act of vandalism is connected to the Seksualiti Merdeka programme,” said Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee, adding that a police report would be lodged soon.
