KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — The Election Commission (EC) will abolish the current practice of candidates being unable to withdraw their nominations and objection process on nomination day, in line with recommendations made by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on electoral reforms.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz said the abolishment was made based on amendments to Section 7 of the Election Offences (Amendment) Act 2012 that was passed in Parliament on April 27 and in use from April 30.
Nazri made the statement in reply to a question from Loke Siew Fook (DAP-Rasah) in Parliament here today.
Loke wanted to know whether the objection process on nomination day had been allowed as per the PSC’s recommendation.
Mohamed Nazri said apart from abolishing the process, the EC had also taken a number of steps to ensure a better electoral system, especially the introduction of indelible ink for voters.
Another introduction is to allow any Malaysian above 21 years of age to assist the blind or physically challenged to mark their votes on the ballot paper (upon the agreement of the disabled person) compared with the current practice whereby only family members of the disabled are allowed to assist. — Bernama
