KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — The Youth and Sports Ministry has denied offering cash to youths to attend the Million Youth Rally in Putrajaya last month.
Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said only volunteers were given a RM15 allowance, which came in the form of a food coupon redeemable at the stalls at the rally.
“About 20,000 volunteers comprising scouts, i-Volunteers and Rakan Muda, were involved in doing the cleaning-up and so on. We did not want it to be like the Bersih rally... they did not clear the mess,” he told reporters at the parliament lobby today.
He said claims by visitors from some states that they were offered an allowance by the ministry to attend the rally were unfounded and untrue.
“The money they received was not from the ministry. It was possibly from a non-governmental organisation or association which sponsored and brought them there,” he said.
He said an allocation of about RM4 million was set aside to mobilise the volunteers but the actual amount utilised would only be known in a month’s time.
“The expenses at the rally were less than what we estimated. In fact, we also received a contribution of almost RM28 million from the private sector to make the event a success,” he said.
On the controversial K-Pop performance during the rally, Shabery said the ministry would in future seek the views of the public before organising such activities.
“We will also be more punctilious and assertive on performers’ attire, especially of artistes from outside the country,” he said. — Bernama
