Nazri: Lawyer with gov't fiat can prosecute AG

A practicing lawyer with a special fiat from the government can prosecute the attorney-general in cases that involved him personally, said de facto Law Minister Nazri Aziz.

“In prosecutions against the AG as an individual, he cannot be prosecuted by those working under him, as it is difficult for his subordinates to do so. Under the constitution, a fiat can be given to an individual, a practicing lawyer for example, to prosecute,” said Nazri.

He was replying to a question from Puchong parliamentarian Gobind Singh Deo during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today, who had asked him how would a complaint that involved the AG be handled.

Gobind was referring to allegations raised by former KL CID chief Mat Zain Ibrahim in a recent Malaysiakini interview that the current the AG was apparently involved in withholding a corruption case involving a chief minister from being prosecuted.
