PAS points to the prophet in haj delay row

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang yesterday defended the party's call for its members to put off their haj in anticipation of a general election being called during the holy season.

Such a decision, he said, was similarly done by Prophet Muhammad when he negotiated with the Quraish of Mekkah.

"Muhammad had entered into the Hudaibiyah treaty despite the agreement stating he would have to delay his umrah to the following year.

NONE"But the treaty recognised Medinah as a legitimate state, and the prophet had taken a political decision in which he won a political victory by delaying his umrah," he told some 300 people in a high tea event in Bukit Pasir, which is in the Pagoh parliamentary constituency helmed by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin (left).

Blasting Umno for criticising PAS as putting politics over religion, Abdul Hadi accused the party of being blind to history.

"Umno has never been consistent in its struggle for Islam because it sees Islam as being apart from politics but according to the Quran, politics is part of Islam," he said.

Politics integral to Islam
In a statement later, Abdul Hadi reiterated that PAS continues to educate its members that politics and the right to choose leaders and the government, is an integral part of Islam.

"PAS with Pakatan Rakyat, if given the power to govern, will never allow the haj season to deny the right of citizens to fulfill their political responsibility," he said.

He added that former Johor Mufti Almarhum Syed Alawi Al Hadad had in the 1950s issued a fatwa about the responsibilities of Muslims in elections and which party should be chosen.

NONE"For the Imams who are still staunch Umno supporters in Johor, please read his book," he said.

Taking the stage later, PAS vice president Salahuddin Ayub (left) put the blame over the haj row on Umno.

"Delaying the haj or not is not the issue, the issue is that BN should not be calling a general election during the haj season," he said.

Salahuddin who is Kubang Kerian MP is expected to relinquish his Kelantan 'safe' seat to contest in his home state of Johor which is an Umno bastion in what some have described as "suicidal" move.

However, Salahuddin appeared upbeat as the PAS top guns descend on Johor for a two-week blitz in a move to boost the local party machinery.

"Umno says I am committing suicide, let's wait and see who will be killed and who will survive, wait for me in Johor," he said.
