AG files appeal against Anwar's acquittal

The Attorney-General's Chambers have filed an appeal against the Kuala Lumpur High Court's decision to acquit Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy charges.

NONEHead of the Trial and Appeals division Kamaluddin Md Said(right) confirmed that the petition of appeal had been filed yesterday.

"It has been filed and there are a few grounds," he said in a text message reply toMalaysiakini

However, he did not reveal the grounds of the appeal.

The prosecution  had until tomorrow to file an appeal after all parties had obtained the written judgment by trial judge Justice Mohamad Zabidin Md Diah.

Justice Zabidin released the written judgment last Monday and the prosecution has 10 days to file its appeal.

Anwar was acquitted on Jan 9 of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan at the Desa Damansara condominium on June 26, 2008.

Among other reasons, Justice Zabidin said he could not corroborate Saiful's testimony with other evidence.
Last week, Saiful's father Azlan Mohd Lazim had said that although it has been six months waiting, they welcome the development and hoped the AG will consider filing the petition of appeal.
