The prime minister has announced that all BN candidates will be vetted to ensure that those who are selected are clean, besides giving a better image for the party in the next general election.
The purpose behind it is simple enough to understand. Whilst there is the need to ensure that candidates are clean, there is also the equally important need to ensure a better image for the party in the next election. As such, BN must be beyond suspicion and above allegations which may have a tendency to affect its chances in the next election.
If that is the case, then the PM should walk the talk himself. He should lead by example and call for an open investigation and response to the allegations made by Deepak Jaikishan of late. The prime minister should also pledge to cooperate in full in the investigation, if necessary, and prove to us that he is serious about his call.
The PM should not apply double standards. If his call applies to all candidates, it must apply to him as well.
If the PM fails to practice what he preaches, he will only show that his call for cleaner candidates and a party with a better image is nothing but yet another political gimmick.
This is the greatest test for Najib. He has caught himself. He must respond to my challenge. He must remember, it is not so much what I have said but what he has said which needs to be tested. Will he voluntarily call for an open inquiry? Will he take the lead in showing that he is serious about cleaner candidates and a better party image for BN in the next election?
