4 opposition, NGO leaders charged with sedition
Two opposition leaders, a student activist and an NGO head were today charged under the Sedition Act 1948 for uttering seditious remarks.
Student activist Safwan Anang, PKR vice-president Tian Chua, Anything But Umno (ABU) chief Haris Ibrahim and PAS' Thamrin Ghafar all claimed trial after being charged under Section 4(1) (b) of the act.
Although all were allowed bail, set at RM5,000 each, Safwan refused it as a sign "protest" and is currently at the Sungai Buloh prison.
Another veteran activist, Hishamuddin Rais, on whom a warrant was issued yesterday for a same matter, also surrendered himself in front of the KL Sessions Court this morning.
The next hearing is scheduled to take place on July 2.
