KUALA TERENGGANU, June 13 — The Terengganu police have arrested the man believed to be involved in abusing the two-year-old girl in Kampung Taman Permint Permai, Bukit Chendering, here.
Terengganu CID chief ACP K.Manoharan said the 28-year-old suspect, who is also the girl’s mother’s boyfriend, was nabbed at about 1.40am on Wednesday in an unnumbered house in Kampung Gong Merawang, Marang.
“The police also seized a motorcycle, which was reported stolen in Kuala Terengganu, from the man whose urine tested positive for methamphetamine,” he told reporters here today.
Manoharan said initial investigation also revealed that the suspect, who is a construction worker, had several previous criminal records related to drugs.
He said the suspect had been remanded for four days to facilitate further investigation into the case.
Manoharan said the police had also recorded statement from the girl’s mother and sought the Child Interview Centre’s (CIC) help to record statement from the girl.
“Our initial investigation found marks of abuse on the victim with the most severe being the burn marks on her feet.
“Based on her wounds, we believe the victim has been abused for almost a week before the report was made,” he said.
Manoharan said the girl’s father was currently serving his time in prison for drug offence and the police would record more statements from several witnesses soon.
The victim, Atylea Jazera Abdullah, was reported to be in stable condition at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) Hospital here.
The child was taken to the hospital by the Terengganu Welfare Department’s officers shortly after she was rescued on Monday night following a report made by a member of the public.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or fine, or both, if convicted. – Bernama
