No more playing of Negaraku in cinemas

The playing of the national anthem at cinemas will cease from tomorrow onwards but the practice would be brought back for one day only on Malaysia Day.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek has proposed that National Film Development Corporation (Finas) to have cinemas play the national anthem on September 16.

NONEAhmad Shabery said that although his ministry has not studied public feedback on the exercise, he said his ministry was not "desperate" about introducing something new.

"It is enough for now. It's just that on September 16, Finas will have to see (what needs to be done). Some things need modifications.

"It depends on whether they make it in time. We need to look at cost effectiveness. I hope it can be played (on that date)," he said when met at a function in Shah Alam today.

Ahmad Shabery was behind the move to play the national anthem at cinemas three days before and after Merdeka Day.

Critics claim that the move was unnecessary for an informal occassion and would not help instill patriotism.

Attention seekers

Meanwhile, Ahmad Shabery also described the individuals who unfurled the Sang Saka Malaya at Dataran Merdeka on the eve of Merdeka Day as attention seekers.

NONE"They want to be different because they feel that they have been forgotten, so they came up with something new. Everyone accepts the Jalur Gemilang (as the national flag)," he said.

Ahmad Shabery expressed confidence that the majority of PAS, PKR and DAP members disagreed with the activists behind the flag, whom he suggested may have mental problems.

The police has thus far arrested two individuals - Hishamuddin Rais and Adam Adli Abdul Halim - in connection with the incident and is asking national laureate A Samad Said to turn himself in.

The flag, which has a white stripe, a red stripe and 12 yellow five-pointed stars, was first raised in 1947 by leftist independence movement group Putera-AMCJA.
