A school is not a slaughterhouse

YOURSAY 'Putting aside religion and race, the slaughtering of live animals and hearing their screams is traumatic even to adults, let alone to children.'

Parents fume over cow slaughter in school

your say, YoursayP Dev Anand Pillai: I wonder what happened to the minister in charge of Hinduism in PM Najib Razak's cabinet and all his cyber warriors?

They may claim all sorts of excuses but does it warrant such an act to be done during school hours in a school which has non-Muslim pupils? This may have been deliberately done as a show of dominance and superiority.

If the Hindus amongst the Indian electorate still consider giving their votes to leaders who support acts like this, then there is no redemption for these people.

Khoo Ewe Choo: Putting aside religion and race, the slaughtering of live animals and hearing their screams and their struggle to stay alive is traumatic even to adults, let alone to children.

HC: I can only imagine that the slaughter of animals in a school compound witnessed by children can potentially be a traumatic experience and reflects an uncivilised approach by the school in handling this matter.

It's insensitive towards Hindus. There are also health risks involved. It's a school, a place where kids go to learn, not to witness these events. For the sake of common sense and civility, stop this.

StrainingGnats, SwallowCamels: "Ritual slaughter normally takes place on mosque grounds, but sometimes it is done at other locations due to lack of facilities, such as neighbourhood fields," said the Malaysiakini report.

There are many mosques and surau, especially in the cities. Surely even the smallest of mosques are large enough and are equipped to slaughter cattle. Why would a field be preferred to a mosque or surau when it comes to ritual killings?

Azhar: Do the right thing. A school is a school, not a slaughterhouse. It does not matter what is being slaughtered and for what.

Democracy: Those who do not know the significant of slaughtering cows on Aidiladha better shut up. Muslims in Malaysia has been practising it since who knows when without any problem.

Why only now the Indian extremists want to make a big fuss of this? Is it because the stupid DAP and PKR Indian leaders had asked them to do so? If you listened to them, you are even more stupid than them.

Gen2indian: No one is disputing the fact that it is festival of sacrifice but does the ritual killing need to be done during school hours, and in the presence of children and Hindus to whom the cow is sacred?

The ritual could easily have been carried out over the two public holidays without loss of teaching time and hurting the feelings of other races.

Phileos: There is nothing wrong with cow slaughter in schools as long as they did it at a right time (during non-school day) when there are no schoolchildren around.

Fair Play: Don't get upset. Just move your children to another school or better still to a Chinese or Indian vernacular school.

Can't you see it? They are thumbing their nose at you to demonstrate their supremacy. And in matters of 'sensitivity', that is only applicable to non-Muslims.

One Finger Zen: They slaughtered a few cows too in a secondary school in Batu Berendam. A school is an institution of learning, not a slaughterhouse.

They could just as easily slaughtered them at the nearest mosque a kilometre away and distribute the meat to the Muslims students. No one would blame them for that.

However, this is a national school with students from different ethnic groups and religious background. To have done what they did, the school authorities are showing that they are insensitive to the needs and feelings of non-Muslims.

Well Thats Fantastic: I would like to complain about this ritual practice being carried out in schools.

I am a Muslim myself and I don't want this being done in plain sight, distressing children and having no sensitivity towards those who are not Muslims.

This is modern society and these animals should slaughtered in a slaughter house not in public. They can then hand out vouchers to Muslims to collect the meat from a butcher shop where they know how to handle raw meat properly.

Anonymous #06188481: The government wishes to hinder the growth of vernacular schools and at the same time encouraging all to attend national schools. Yet the school authorities are so insensitive to the Hindus and Buddhists students in national schools.

I suppose the Muslims are going to suggest I leave Malaysia now since I don't agree with their ‘Ketuanan Melayu-Muslim' arrogance.

Anonymous #03815719: I respect the religious ceremony of the Muslims, as I was told by my Muslim friends that the slaughtering of animals cows, camels, and goats on Hari Raya Haji, is to make religious offerings and distribute the meat to the poor.

But why slaughter cows in schools? It should be done in a mosque/surau.

Slumdog: This latest indiscretion is most unfortunate. I have no issue about slaughtering cows for whatever reason when it is conducted humanely and properly in an abattoir facility. I don't think a school compound is appropriate by any stretch of the imagination.

It is most barbaric, uncivilised, insensitive and very disturbing to the children who witnessed the aftermath of the slaughter. Aren't there proper abattoir facilities for cows to be slaughtered?

Umno politicians always protest vigorously about protecting the sensitivities of Muslims but completely ignore the sensitivities of other religions. Would they tolerate a pig being slaughtered in the street?

And as usual we can now expect a tirade of abuse, spin and justification of the actions of those involved in this sorry affair from Malay NGOs and right-wing Umno politicians. - Malaysiakini
