YAN - Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Jalil has dismissed claims that the party has rejected Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.
Shahrizat said today that Mukhriz has displayed a great performance despite losing to incumbents during the contest for Umno vice-presidential posts in the party election, last Saturday.
“For Wanita, Mukhriz did not lose (in the party election). He had never contested any supreme council and vice-president post previously but he garnered great support from the party delegates.
“He had obtained popular votes, proving that his leadership was well accepted by party members,” said Shahrizat to reporters after visiting the Wanita Umno election machinery operation centre.
Shahrizat was asked to comment on Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s deputy president Azmin Ali’s statement that Mukhriz’s failure, during Umno’s election, showed that the party rejected his leadership.
Azmin had said this prior to the announcement of Pas' candidate for the Sungai Limau by-election, Mohd Azam Abdul Samat here on Monday night.
Meanwhile, newly-elected Umno supreme council member Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan also dismissed allegations that the party rejected Mukhriz.
“I don’t agree with such claims. Mukhriz had received a great amount of endorsement during the party polls. This is a family contest and no one is rejected.
“Azmin was not chosen to become the Selangor Menteri Besar. Can we assume that the opposition leadership rejected him?,” he said to reporters, here.
