KJ: Non-Muslims shouldn't worry about muzakarah

The proposed muzakarah (dialogue) between PAS and Umno should not threaten non-Muslims, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

"I do not want, when PAS and Umno meet, that it is seen as for the sake of Islamic unity alone. We represent all Malaysians," Khairy told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.

"So non-Muslims do not have to fear or worry about an alliance between between the two biggest Malay-Islamic parties."

He was responding to a question about what he believes was the agenda for the muzakarah, which was mooted by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang during the party's annual general assembly over the weekend.

He added that a timeframe for the meeting should  not be set and there should be no conditions to hold such talks for the good of Muslims.

"No timeframe, we shouldn't rush... if there is a time-frame then the Muzakarah may not be carried out for the general interest but for the sake of meeting an agenda. Let it flow naturally... without pressure from any parties."
Khairy said that Umno would object to the meeting if PAS was only keen on using such a platform to forward its own agenda. Otherwise, Umno is prepared to come to the table with no conditions.
Umno bureaus given KPI
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said on Monday that he was open to talks with PAS once he knew the scope and had more details on what the Islamists party actually wants.

Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yaacob later confirmed that he would meet the PM but to discuss on the implementation of hudud laws in the state.

Khairy was speaking to reporters after chairing the first meeting of the new Umno Youth executive committee, during which its state and central leaders were named and appointed.

The Youth and Sports Minister called his new team "more solid" compared to 2008 as it consisted of more younger leaders, many of who were also graduates and professionals.

He noted that only five members including himself was retained from the old exco. And for the first time, the Umno Youth heads of the 27 bureaus will be assigned key performing indicator (KPI) targets to meet.

Umno Youth also aims to register 2.5 million new voters before the next general elections and carry "the voice of the young generation".
