KL assessment hike shelved pending dialogues

PARLIAMENT The controversial assessment tax hikes on property owners in Kuala Lumpur will be postponed to enable dialogues to be held from January to March next year, Deputy Federal Territories Minister Loga Bala Mohan said.

He said so while wrapping up the ministry’s 2014 Budget debate at the committee stage today.

The tax was initially supposed to come into affect on Jan 1, with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) saying that dialogues will take place until March with residents.

NONELoga Bala (left) told the House this afternoon that the new rates will not come into effect until the dialogues with the property owners are completed.
“I have good news for all the KL MPs. The assessment hike will be postponed from January until after March,” Loga Bala said.

He later explained that the ministry and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) have not decided on a new implementation date of the tax hikes.

The hikes, ranging up to 300 percent for some property owners, has come under criticism from KL MPs, who claimed that they have received various complaints from city residents and that the hike notices came without any prior warning.

DBKL has justified the move by claiming that the assessment has not been raised in the past 21 years for Kuala Lumpur.
