Pulau Jerejak’s name remains

Guan Eng denies that it's now called Mazu Island
GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng denied today that his government had changed the name of Pulau Jerejak, as alleged by State Opposition Leader Jahara Hamid.
“I have not approved any proposal to change the name and will also not do so in the future,” he told newsmen gathered in his office in Komtar.
“The name Pulau Jerejak will remain as it is so long as the Pakatan is in power.”
In the state assembly yesterday, Jahara referred to a Facebook page alleging that the island had been renamed Mazu Island. She demanded an explanation from the state government.
Lim accused Jahara of defaming his administration.
He said that since Pakatan Rakyat took power in 2008, there had never been a proposal to change the name of Pulau Jerejak, formerly a leper colony and detention centre for banished criminals.
He said Jahara should show proof that the island had since undergone a name change.
“She is a lawyer and she should know not to make any accusation without substantiating proof,” he added.
The 362-hectare Pulau Jerejak is rich in flora and fauna.
