The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported its phone lines were running hot yesterday, responding to requests for help from residents around Denpasar.
Chief Operating Officer at BPBD Denpasar, Made Suparta, explained that more than 80 homes were damaged yesterday owing to high winds and torrential rain, with some reports of a whirlwind being investigated by the Meteorology Bureau.
“The events of yesterday resulted in damage to over 100 homes and businesses, 10 of which were badly damaged,” he explained. “The SAR team were busy throughout the day helping people.”
The worst-hit area was the village of Pedungan in Denpasar; however, fallen trees in Jl Teuku Umar also caused problems for residents and some major traffic congestion.
“We are still helping to repair the damage to homes and clearing fallen trees that have disrupted traffic,” he said.
