Umno MP reminds gov't of GE13 promise to reduce tolls
BN’s Kepala Batas MP Reezal Merican Naina Merican today reminded the government to keep to the “spirit of its promises” over the toll hike issue, pointing out that the BN government had promised in its election manifesto to reduce intra-city tolls.
“Specifically BN had promised to the people, to reduce intra-city tolls in stages (in the election manifesto),” Reezal Merican said in a statement today.
“I hope that (Prime Minister) Najib Abdul Razak would look into this matter more comprehensively,” he said.
He said that the proposal to hike toll rates must be relooked into, because no matter the quantum of increase, the people would still be burdened.
Reezal Merican (left) also said that the Works Ministry must make public its study on the restructuring of the toll charges at the Besraya, LDP, and NPE highways respectively.
“I am also appealing to the Works Ministry to make more holistic studies before signing new concession deals with new highways. It must be done taking into account reasonable profit to the said companies,” he said.
He also said on the whole, the government’s subsidy rationalisation policy, which is slowly seeing a slew of price hikes from petrol to sugar and other items, must be done “more carefully”.
“This must not burden the people at any rate. Based on the response of the people, they are feeling burdened by whatever that is happening lately,” he said.
