BUKIT GELUGOR Bukit Gelugor candidate Ramkarpal Singh said those who taking as literal the DAP's 'I am Karpal Singh' banners and posters are foolish.
"Don't take it literally, what we want is for the people to go on with the spirit and to know we will continue with Karpal's struggles," said Ramkarpal after attending a gotong-royong at Desa Mawar, Air Itam, this morning.
"Everyone says they are Karpal Singh but no one can be him, there is only one Karpal Singh," said the late Bukit Gelugor MP's third son.
Ramkarpal was referring to complaints by independent candidate Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Sathar who urged the local council not to practise double standards by seizing his 'Hudud in Penang 2020' banners.
Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) seized Nabi Bux's banners for carrying the Penang crest, which is illegal as the candidate had allegedly not obtained any permission to use it.
"The Election Commission should look out for the DAP's 'I am Karpal Singh' banners, too.
"Is that right? They should use banners saying 'I am the son of Karpal Singh'," said Nabi Bux (left) after lodging a police report against MPPP over his own banners at Jalan Pattani yesterday.
Parti Cinta Malaysia's candidate Huan Cheng Guan also asked if it was proper for DAP to use banners depicting Karpal in its campaign.
It is learnt that the Election Commission (EC) is looking into the matter to see if such actions are against election rules.
'What about Najib posters?'
Ramkarpal said it would be difficult for him to explain the matter to Nabi Bux if he refuses to understand what the DAP slogans mean, and if he still wants to take it in its literal sense.
He added DAP will continue to use the 250-odd banners and posters as the EC has yet to inform the party that it is an offence to do so.
When met in Kampung Melayu this morning, Ramkarpal showed DAP's latest postcard to be distributed to the public, including one with the caption 'We Are All Karpal Singh, The Legacy Continues'.
Last night at a night ceramah in Farlim, state DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow said that 'I am Karpal Singh' is merely the party's theme and message to the voters that the late lawyer's work will continue despite his untimely death.
"It is not that we are saying that Karpal Singh is contesting, we have also not put up as many billboards and posters as we had (in the last May 5 general election)," he said.
"If other parties want to use posters of Prime Minister Najib Razak or his wife Rosmah Mansor, they can also do so," he quipped.
Chow recalled that during the May 5 polls last year, BN had used banners and posters of Najib and 1Malaysia but it did not mean that the premier was the candidate.
He also said, "Just because people say they are Karpal Singh, it does not mean they can become the famous lawyer."
Ramkarpal is facing Nabi Bux, Huan and another independent candidate Abu Backer Sidek Mohd Zan in a 13 day campaign that goes to polls on May 25, next Sunday.
The Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat fell vacant upon Karpal's death due to a tragic road accident on Apr 17.
MCA, which declined to contest in the by-election, failed to capture the seat from Karpal thrice, since 2004.
In May 5, Karpal retained the seat with a thumping majority of 41,778 votes against MCA's Teh Beng Yeam.
