"I said I will support BN candidate Datuk Mah Siew Kong to upgrade the Internet infrastructure in the constituency.
"But there were people saying that I made a promise that this would be done only if the BN won. It is not true," Shabery (pic) told Bernama.
Saying there were many challenges in upgrading the internet infrastructure, Shabery said his statement was "spun by the pro-opposition media".
"But I support Datuk Mah who said if he is returned in the by-election he will ensure Teluk Intan will enjoy better infrastructure, including higher speed broadband," Shabery said in Teluk Intan last night.
"We know we are not perfect and have weaknesses. That is what they will try to capitalise, and that is why some people have asked me to apologise.
"I feel there is no need for me to apologise, just because they cannot see that my statement is right," he added.
Last week, Bernama quoted Shabery as saying that Teluk Intan’s broadband facilities could only be improved if the parliamentary seat was held by a BN representative.
“This is a good proposition and can only be realised if the candidate comes from the same party as the one that oversees the local authorities," he reportedly said.
The statement was criticised by Pakatan Rakyat as careless, with DAP's candidate for Teluk Intan Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud saying it was the minister's responsibility to provide good internet access.
“It doesn’t matter who wins this coming by-election, it is still the responsibility of the ministry to improve broadband speed in the area.
"But not necessarily just for Teluk Intan, but the entire country,” she had said when asked to comment on the issue last week.
