Hindraf warns BN of Indian voter backlash

Indian voters will punish BN in the Teluk Intan by-election for breaking its promise to implement the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia (PHM), its head P Waythamoorthy.

"This will be a direct result of their (Indians) anger and frustration for being sidelined and cheated again in any (BN's) attempt to enhance their socio-economic development," he added.

Waythamoorthy claimed that the movement's analysis of the crowd showed at least 65 percent of Indians would vote for DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud.

He added that the Teluk Intan Indian voters are largely plantation workers and the last two generations were immensely affected by displacement as the rubber estates were acquired for development.

BN signed the MOU with PWM after it endorsed the ruling coalition shortly before the 13th general election in 2013.

The MOU was meant to seek government funding for specific areas to uplift the Indian community and also saw Waythamoorthy being appointed as deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department.

However, less than a year after his appointment, Waythamoorthyresigned, citing BN's reluctance to move forward with the MOU resolution.

Waythamoorthy also said Umno's recent stunt of storming the Penang state assembly and its Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi calling the Chinese community "ingrates" would also not bode well for the ruling coalition.
