Rayer fears for his life, but refuses to apologise

Despite fearing for his safety, DAP Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer has refused to apologise over his "celaka" (damned) remark which sparked anger among Penang Umno members.

Rayer said he would not retract the word as he did not direct it at all Umno members.

"What I said was in context of those leaders who joined the protest(against Machang Bubuk assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon)," he said.

Rayer used the word when condemning Kepala Batas MP Reezal Merican Naina Merican and two other Umno leaders who joined the January protest at Sunway Carnival Mall, Seberang Jaya in January to protest Lee's ‘I Love Kangkung’ flash mob which they deemed an insult to Prime Minister Najib Razak.

"I have the freedom to say this, it was not against Umno," argued Rayer when met at a walkabout with Bukit Gelugor by-election candidate Ramkarpal Singh.

A group of about 12 irate protestors barged into the state legislative assembly yesterday looking for Rayer who was not in the House.

They comprised members of Umno Youth from Tasek Gelugor and Kepala Batas, Perkasa as well as the Federation of Peninsula Muslim Students.

Eggs for Rayer

Another 20 others had gathered outside the building, shouting fiery slogans such as "bangsat", "pariah", "racist" against Rayer.

They brought eggs to hurl at Rayer, while they pushed, shook and banged the gate forcefully, slightly damaging it.

The protesters claimed Rayer's use of the word "celaka" was an insult to the Malays and Muslims.

Rayer was appalled over the incident and has lodged a police report in Jelutong yesterday.

"I fear for the safety of my family and my life," he said, referring to the threat by some protesters that they would look for him in his house.

George Town OCPD Mior Faridalatrash said 12 men between the age of 25 and 35 were nabbed yesterday.

They are being investigated under section 448 of the Penal Code for trespass and section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and damage.
