WATCH OUT FOLKS! Special meeting to discuss TOLL RATE HIKES on May 12 - Works minister
KUALA LUMPUR - A special meeting to discuss the toll rates will be held on May 12 with three other relevant government agencies before deciding on the matter, Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof said.
He said the meeting will be held with the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, who is in charge of the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), along with the Public Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) and the Ministry of Finance.
“We have had a meeting earlier with the highway concessionaires and they came up with a proposal on the toll rates.
“We will present the proposal to the EPU, UKAS and the Ministry of Finance on Monday to discuss the matter,” he said at a press conference held after the Works Ministry’s integrated enforcement operations in Subang, today.
In December last year the New Straits Times had reported that the government was considering the request of nine highway concessionaires to have their toll rates reviewed. It was reported that the highways were operating in the Klang Valley at a loss.
On Jan 9, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the cabinet would only decide on the toll rate hike after conducting a detailed laboratory study.
He added that the study would determine the best method to reduce the burden of road users.
While, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, on Feb 6 said there would be no toll increase this year as the government had agreed to pay RM400 million in accumulated compensation to highway concessionaires after imposing a freeze on a revision of toll rates since 2011.
