The High Court today dismissed an appeal by the Attorney-General against the acquittal of 21 people, including a lawmaker and a Catholic priest, for participating in a candlelight vigil six years ago.
They were acquitted at the Sessions court in September 2012 for taking part in the gathering, without their defence being called.
The 21, who included Petaling Jaya Utara member of parliament (MP) Tony Pua and Reverend Paulino Francesco Miranda, were also freed from the charge of failing to comply with police orders to disperse.
They were alleged to have taken part in the candlelight vigil in front of the Petaling Jaya City Council building between 9.50pm and 10.10pm on Nov 9, 2008.
They were also said to have disobeyed the then PJ deputy police chief Superintendent Mohamad Shukor Sulong's order to disperse.
