The Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has been appointed as the body to determine the syariah compliance benchmark for services aside from food products and Islamic banking.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Jamil Khir Baharom (right) said the appointment was made during a National Council for Islamic Affairs (MKI) meeting recently and Jakim's responsibility had now extended to determining syariah compliance criteria for products such as tourism, spas and hotels.
"Jakim has a team to determine the criteria for products like Islamic tourism, spas or hotels to be syariah compliant.
"When everything have been fine-tuned, these services will be recognised by Jakim as syariah compliant, just as food is given halal certification," he told reporters after opening the 19th Syariah Advisory Council for Financial Institutions in Malaysia Dialogue in Kuala Lumpur today.
Jamil Khir said this was necessary as there was demand from the service industry for halal certification with more consumers now preferring Islamic-based products.
On another development, he said Malaysia was now being referred to by the world on implementation of the Islamic financial system such as Islamic banking and Takaful insurance coverage.
"We have an excellent record in syariah-based finance and we hope other syariah players in Malaysia make a name in the world as a point of reference for other countries," he said.
The one-day dialogue which has been an annual programme since 2004, was themed "Syariah Compliance Strengthens Economy of the Ummah" and participated by 150 people.
The programme organised by Jakim aimed to increase national-level cooperation and coordination in the field of finance based on syariah.
Among the presenters and reviewers of working papers were Malaysian Securities Commission and Bank Negara Syariah Advisory Council chairman Dr Mohd Daud Bakar and Islamic Da'wah Foundation Malaysia president Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
