The trio – Hoo Leng Hong, Xin Ying and Endrew Chin – were asked to do so yesterday through a letter by the police to Lee's service centre in Alma, Bukit Mertajam.
The letter said their cooperation is needed in investigations being conducted under section 500 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation.
Lee had during the protest over price hikes of goods satirically stuffed kangkung (spinach in Malay) into the mouth of a cut-out image of Najib.
The act was in reference to Najib's speech widely aired over social media in which he said the price of kangkung had gone down.
The next day, a group of local Umno leaders and supporters – including Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir, Umno’s Bukit Mertajam division chief and former state deputy chairman – gathered in front of Lee's service centre and burnt his effigy. At least two people were reportedly also roughed up by the mob.
The letter for the trio to show up, dated September 3, was signed by Hasan Mohamad Salih, a senior crime investigation officer on behalf of the chief of the Seberang Perai Tengah district police.
Lee said the investigation was taking place eight months after the event and this creates the perception that it is a politically-motivated exercise.
