It is understood that the undergraduates were arrested by police today for failing to get consent from the authorities before giving speeches at a public area in Jalan Gaya in the city.
Fahmi said police had intervened while the undergraduates were speaking about the abuse of power by the UM administration.
"We are still at the Kota Kinabalu police station waiting for our statements to be recorded," the UM Undergraduates' Association president told The Malaysian Insider.
The undergraduates are from Universiti Malaya, Universiti Technologi Mara, Universiti Malaya Sabah, Kota Kinabalu and Labuan.
The group of undergraduates were giving an explanation to the public at Jalan Gaya in Kota Kinabalu before continuing the speech at Universiti Malaya Sabah as part of their “Jelajah Reformasi” nationwide roadshow.
"Before giving a speech, we have to educate the rakyat about reformasi, academic freedom and the repeal of the Sedition Act," Fahmi said.
"The response from the public of Sabah has been most encouraging. We received feedback that many have been listening to our explanation."
Just before they were arrested, the undergraduates managed to distribute pamphlets on academic freedom and the abolishing of the Sedition Act.
Fahmi had previously caused controversy by inviting de facto PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to give a speech at Universiti Malaya (UM).
Despite the event being banned by the UM administration, Fahmi went ahead with the programme.
He and seven other students were hauled up before the UM disciplinary panel last Friday for an explanation.
