Govt acting ‘desperate’, say Anwar’s family

The police crackdown on the opposition leader's supporters and the nationwide roadshow are signs the sodomy ruling was politically motivated.
nurul nuha anwarKUALA LUMPUR: The family of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has lashed out at the government for their relentless crackdown on his supporters as well as the nationwide roadshow about the sodomy case, saying that by their “desperate” behaviour, it was obvious Anwar’s guilty verdict was politically motivated.
His daughter Nurul Nuha Anwar told the Malay Mail Online, “The Barisan Nasional regime is feeling threatened, they are clamping down on people, including those using social media as a platform to voice their opinions.
“They are getting desperate… exhausting all means in trying to curtail freedom of expression.”
She was referring to the spate of arrests in the aftermath of the sodomy court case that saw Anwar sentenced to five years in prison for sodomising his former aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
Condemning the arrests and calling for an end to draconian laws, she added, “We even have the Inspector-General of Police on Twitter threatening to take action against people.
“Just a few days ago, Parti Sosialis Malaysia secretary-general S Arutchelvan was arrested (for commenting about the sodomy case).”
The police have arrested and released activists Adam Adli Abdul Halim and Fariz Musa including PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad for participating in a pro-Anwar rally on Saturday.
Also speaking to the news portal was another daughter of Anwar’s, Nurul Ilham Anwar, who took issue with lead prosecutor Muhammad Shafee Abdullah for speaking at a roadshow organised by Umno Youth and exposing details of the sodomy case, some of which were explicit in nature.
“It proves our point it is a politically-motivated persecution. A top senior lawyer going on a roadshow endorsed by a minister.
“If this does not prove that Anwar is a threat to Umno, I do not what is,” she said.
