PUTRAJAYA - The Cabinet has instructed Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to issue a statement explaining his controversial call to boycott errant Chinese traders.
According to a Facebook post by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, the directive was issued at the Cabinet meeting.
Liow, who is also the MCA president, told the Cabinet today that the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister’s Facebook posting had stirred up much controversy.
“The Chinese community is extremely unhappy with this and the Cabinet needs to address this issue as soon as possible to avoid the issue from further heating up.”
Liow said that he also informed the Cabinet that the MCA was demanding Ismail Sabri to retract the remarks.
He added that he requested the Cabinet put the MCA’s demand into the meeting’s record
Earlier this month, Ismail Sabri had urged the Malay community to boycott Chinese traders who refused to reduce prices, following the drop in fuel prices.
The Bera lawmaker, however, later explained, following a huge backlash from both sides of the divide, that he was speaking about errant traders and did not target the Chinese community in general.
He was subsequently called in by the police to give a statement after police reports were lodged by the MCA.
The Chinese-based party’s demand for Ismail Sabri to retract the statements may not sit well with the Umno minister who had previously slammed the MCA for its criticisms. - http://www.therakyatpost.com
