Unable to identify the student who stole RM100, a teacher punished the whole class until the culprit came forward.
KUALA LUMPUR: Since none of the 40 girls at a religious school in Gombak admitted to stealing RM100 from a fellow student, the whole class was made to strip and caned as punishment.
They were caned twice on their backs and once on their palms at their dormitory last Wednesday.
The students were also made to squat from between 1am and 4am until someone admitted to stealing the money.
The mother of a 13-year-old girl said her daughter offered to admit taking the money because she could not bear seeing her classmates being punished in such a manner.
“If no one took responsibility for the theft, the punishment could have continued until the morning assembly,” Sinar Harian quoted the mother as saying after she lodged a report against the school at the Gombak police station on Friday.
Fearful of the publicity, the school administration wanted to resolve the issue and told the mother to withdraw the report.
Gombak police chief Asst Comm Ali Ahmad said school administration officials would be called in for investigations.
