Barisan Nasional secretary says ruling coalition united in following the constitution
PUTRAJAYA: The Barisan Nasional sneered at PAS today about its plans for hudud criminal penalties in syariah law, describing it as “political hudud” and said the ruling coalition were united in standing by the constitution.
The coalition’s secretary-general, Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, said PAS must abide by the Federal Constitution in wishing to impose hudud criminal justice under syariah law.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has filed notice with Parliament that he intends to table a private member’s Bill under federal law to enable hudud penalties to be carried out in Kelantan.
On Wednesday the Kelantan state assembly had unanimously approved legislation to amend its syariah criminal code to include hudud punishments such as amputation of limbs and stoning to death.
When asked about the Hadi Bill today, Tengku Adnan accused Pakatan Rakyat’s coalition partners, the DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat, of using the hudud issue to destroy the Barisan Nasional coalition.
“As a Muslim, we support Allah’s punishment. The ones playing are DAP and PKR. They are breaking up but they think they can break BN,” he said, according to Malaysiakini.
PAS and DAP are at odds over the hudud issue, amidst fear that their differences will lead to the collaps of Pakatan Rakyat. “However the BN leadership is different, because we believe in consensus. Our view is simple, all of us agree that we will follow whatever the Constitution states,” he added.
Asked if he thought the PAS hudud Bill was against the constitution, Tengku Adnan answered: “PAS’s hudud is political hudud.”
On Friday, MCA president Liow Tong Lai said cabinet ministers had reached a consensus to reject hudud as being against the Constitution.
