Kedah youth leader wants 'stern action' against the press for publishing 'unconfirmed reports'

ALOR STAR: Kedah Umno Youth has filed a police report against the Malaysian Insider over its report, quoting sources, which said the Rulers Conference had rejected a constitutional amendment that would have allowed the hudud Islamic penal code to be imposed in Kelantan.

Stern action should be taken as a lesson to all parties including owners of opposition, pro-government or independent media to avoid publishing unconfirmed reports, said Saiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin, head of the Kedah wing, according to Bernama.

He was quoted as saying the report linking the Rulers Conference to hudud law showed that the Malaysian Insider was now desperate.

“The royal institution is a symbol of national pride and should not be tarnished by irresponsible hands,” he said outside Kota Setar police headquarters today.

The Malaysian Insider, quoting sources, reported on Wednesday that the Rulers’ meeting of March 11 had objected to the constitutional amendment. The monthly Rulers Conference, usually at Istana Negara, is attended by the Rulers of Malay States and Yang Dipertuan Negeri, the constitutional heads of other states, with their menteri besar or chief ministers in attendance. It is usually chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Approval of the Rulers Conference is required for certain changes to the Constitution, the law or certain policy matters, as set out in the Federal Constitution.
