He will, however, remain chief executive officer of the Performance Delivery Management Unit (Pemandu), which is under the Prime Minister's Department.
Jala tweeted about the milestone, saying: "Today was my last Cabinet meeting. Constitutional limit of six years as senator/minister. I will continue as CEO of Pemandu".
Earlier today, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim also confirmed Jala's end of tenure as senator and minister.
"He has completed his term, so it is mandatory for him to stop his service as senator," Shahidan said when contacted by The Malaysian Insider.
Jala received praise and thanks on his Twitter timeline, including from opposition lawmaker Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua, who tweeted: "@Idris Jala_has ended his term as senator & no longer in the Cabinet. Thank u for your effort to bring reform".
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin also tweeted: "It was an honour to serve with you in Cabinet. Glad you're staying on at Pemandu".
