PETALING JAYA - MCA has urged Umno members not to use racial rhetoric for political mileage at the Umno general assembly in December, said MCA publicity bureau chairman Datuk Chai Kim Sen.
“This is to prevent racial harmony from being destroyed, or the Federal Constitution contravened when freedom of speech is abused, marring racial integration,” he said.
Chai said Umno leaders at both the central or divisional level must ensure that the rhetoric by their members would not descend to extremism.
“Being the largest component party in Barisan Nasional, Umno has the responsibility to ensure its compliance with the Barisan’s spirit of protecting all ethnic groups as guaranteed in the Federal Constitution.
“Any damage to ethnic relations, as well as the violation of the Barisan spirit and Federal Constitution, must be condemned and dealt with,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Chai reminded that the Alliance and later Barisan, was set up to maintain the ethnic diversity of the nation and defend the constitutional rights of the various ethnic groups.
“Any action or verbal slurs which breach the Barisan spirit must be dealt with,” he said. - ANN
