A DAP lawmaker says heads must roll over conflicting statements by ministers on the issue of bringing in some 1.5 million Bangladeshi workers to Malaysia.
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said it was worrying that two federal ministers could not get their facts right about the number of Bangladesh workers to be sent to Malaysia.
He said while Deputy Prime Miniser Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had announced in June last year that the government planned to bring in 1.5 million workers from Bangladesh in stages, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot today said the figure was workers registered with Dhaka meant to be sent to 139 countries.
"Two ministers with PhD cannot get their facts right.
"The level of competency among Barisan Nasional leaders is now more worrying," Lim said in a statement today.
"The minister who got it wrong over the 1.5 million Bangladeshi workers should resign and apologise for confusing the people for the last eight months," he added.
He urged the Cabinet to clarify the final number, whether it was 1.5 million to make their way into Malaysia or to be sent to 139 countries.
He said adding to the confusion was Zahid's announcement today of a freeze on the 1.5 million workers, less than 24 hours after Richard confirmed that Putrajaya had signed the memorandum of understanding with Bangladesh.
"This proves to the world yet again that the Barisan Nasional government does not keep its promise, neither does it honour its contracts."
Zahid announced today that Putrajaya was suspending recruitment of foreign workers from all source countries, including Bangladesh, one day after signing a deal with Dhaka.
