Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has announced that he and his wife Dr Siti Hasmah Ali will quit Umno in protest against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"I want to leave Umno because it is no longer Umno. It is a party dedicated to protecting Najib.
"I can't be a member of such a party," he announced at a press conference in Putrajaya today.
This is the second time Mahathir and his wife have quit the party to protest against a sitting prime minister.
The couple previously quit Umno in 2008 to protest Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's leadership and only rejoined when Abdullah stepped down in 2009.
The former premier also disclosed that he would not be forming a new party or joining any existing ones.
