Umno should be voted out of power if continues to back Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, said former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"The party should be voted out of power.
"But the opposition doesn't have the majority," Mahathir said when asked if Umno should be given the boot.
Mahathir also dismissed any potential of a vote of no-confidence against Najib, saying Umno lawmakers would not dare to vote against the premier.
He was speaking at a press conference in Putrajaya today during which he announced that he would quit Umno.
Before the event, Mahathir had met members of the opposition including Amanah's Mujahid Yusof Rawa, Hatta Ramli, and Hanipa Maidin as well as PKR's Tian Chua.
He said they discussed and agreed on a common ground which was to remove Najib.
Asked what his next step would be, Mahathir proposed the setting-up of a core group to coordinate the fight against the prime minister.
However, he said he would not be leading the core group.
"I will be one of them (a member) but I'm not leading," Mahathir said. -Mkini
