We’re just demanding what is ours, Perkasa tells Rafidah

The Malay rights pressure group Perkasa today flayed former minister Rafidah Aziz, for saying it is embarrassing that Malays still want crutches today.
The NGO’s education bureau chairperson, Sirajuddin Salleh, said Rafidah is wrong to say Malays are begging for help, because the Malays are actually taking what is “rightfully” theirs.
“Perkasa would like to remind Rafidah and all Malaysians that Malays are not begging for special treatment but taking what is rightfully theirs as natives of this country,” he said in a statement.
“We must remember that Malay rights are just part of the quid pro quo arrangement negotiated to gain independence,” he said.
He said this is explicitly stated in the Wasiat Raja-raja Melayu and federal constitution under Article 153 which deals with the 'special position' of the Malays.
Sirajuddin said Rafidah’s statement on this shows she has forgotten her roots and the fact that he had championed the same concessions for Malays when she was long-serving Wanita Umno chief.
“So she is rich now and is a chairperson of a non-bumiputera firm. Does that mean she has forgotten her roots and no longer need to pander to this section of society? Don’t be a Malay traitor!” he said.
Rafidah, who was international trade and industry minister, is the chairperson of budget carrier AirAsia.
He added that the Malay community still needs a hand-up because income and equity gaps between races are still large.
Official statistics show that bumiputera households make up most of the top 20 percent income earners in Malaysia.
However, the community also sees the widest intra-group income disparity.

The bumiputera make up 53.81 percent of the top income earners in Malaysia, but when the comparison is made within the bumiputera group itself, top income earners only comprise 16.34 percent of the community.
A total of 38.96 percent of bumiputera households are considered middle income while the majority – 44.7 percent – are in the bottom 40 percent income earners in Malaysia.
This is in contrast with the Chinese and Indian communities, where the M40 group makes up the majority.-Mkini
