Malay, English front pages snub Save Malaysia rally

Despite the unprecedented meeting of traditional foes yesterday to rally to ‘Save Malaysia’ and condemn Prime Minister Najib Razak, the event was conspicuously missing from some of this morning’s dailies front pages.
Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia headlined Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s bungalow-gate and logging, while illegal jetties, e-ads and Terengganu’s menteri besar occupied New Straits TimesThe Star and Berita Harian’s front pages respectively.
Only the major Chinese dailies unanimously headlined the full-day gathering of Umno rebels, opposition and civil society leaders at Shah Alam Convention Centre yesterday.
NST carried a report on the rally on Page 12, headlined ‘Dr M admits to being a dictator’, while Berita Harian headlined, ‘Against the constitution’.
The Star’s full page report on Page 6 cautiously wrote, ‘Still trying to warm up’ and said the new coalition is “awkward and insecure” but may “spell trouble” for BN.

Only Sinar Harian from among the non-Chinese dailies made a frontpage splash with ‘The people have lost patience’ and a photograph of the historic joining of hands between former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his traditional arch enemies opposition leaders Azmin Ali, Lim Kit Siang and Mahfuz Omar, among others.
The Malay daily covered the event with three full-page reports.
The Chinese dailies mostly featured photographs of the historic line up, with Sin Chew Daily featuring a close up of Lim shaking hands with Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and Mahathir, headlined ‘Umno to decide on new PM’.
Oriental Daily headlined ‘Closed door meeting fires at Najib’, while Nanyang Siang Pau headlined ‘Sign the Citizen’s Declaration without fear’, quoting Mahathir's speech yesterday urging the public to support the group's call. -Mkini
