PKR Youth leader says Sedition Act should not be used against any member of society, let alone a former long-serving prime minister.
PETALING JAYA: PKR Youth leader Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has come to the defence of former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, following reports the latter is being probed for sedition.
“It does not make sense that the authorities believe national security can be threatened by a 90-year-old statesman,” Nik Nazmi said in a statement today.
According to him, the Sedition Act 1948 should not be used against any member of society, let alone a prime minister who for years, led the country.
Nik Nazmi said the authorities should instead act against Prime Minister Najib Razak over revelations of his role in 1Malaysia Development Berhad and on the billions deposited in his personal bank accounts.
The PKR man was commenting on reports yesterday quoting Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamad as confirming that police had opened investigation papers on Mahathir under the Sedition Act.
Nik Nazmi also lambasted the sedition probe against three lawyers after they submitted a motion at the AGM of the Malaysian Bar calling for the resignation of Attorney-General Apandi Ali for clearing Najib of all criminal wrongdoing in the RM2.6 billion political donation and SRC International controversies.
“Security laws are supposed to be used to protect the country from terror threats which are very real, not to settle political scores.
“I believe any sane citizen would share this sentiment and would condemn the actions against Dr Mahathir and the lawyers,” he said.
