Come clean on the 500,000 new voters, EC told

Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah also wants the Election Commission to explain how the new voters would impact the redelineation exercise.
Maria-ChinPETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 wants the Election Commission (EC) to provide details of the 500,000 newly registered voters, voicing concern that they may not be valid voters.
Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah told FMT it was not a problem if there are 500,000 new voters, but the EC must provide details of the voters.
Earlier this month, DAP’s Serdang lawmaker Ong Kian Ming voiced concern over the recently released Quarter 3, 2016 electoral roll update, which showed that 501,799 new voters were added to the electoral roll between July and September.
This, he said, was five times the usual number of newly registered voters for each quarter.
Maria also wanted the EC to clarify how these new voters would impact the redelineation excercise.
More importantly, she said, the existing electoral roll was incomplete.
“There are thousands on the electoral roll whose addresses are incomplete. Priority should be given to ensuring these details are complete.”
The Bersih chair also wanted the EC to reveal from which government agencies and NGOs were assistant registrar officers (AROs) appointed.
“We haven’t seen any people running around the city registering voters. So who is doing this and where is it being done. There must be some form of transparency.”
Maria said all NGOs should be allowed to register voters, adding that Bersih would also like to assist in this exercise.
Ong had said there was suspicion that the 11,959 AROs were from the civil service and were used to register voters selectively, especially in the marginal parliament and state seats.
Civil servants comprise 98.3 per cent of AROs, with the rest coming from political parties, universities and NGOs. -FMT
