PETALING JAYA: Two pairs of former beauty queens ended up finishing first and second in the The Amazing Race Asia Season 5 but unfortunately, the Malaysian pair were pipped to the finishing line by the duo from the Philippines.
Miss Malaysia-World 2011 Chloe Chen and Miss Malaysia-World 2012 Yvonne Lee landed on the mat just minutes behind the winning team, Filipina duo, Maggie Wilson and Parul Shah, The New Straits Times reported.
In third place was a married couple from the Philippines, Eric Tai and Rona Samson-Tai. The final race for the season took place in Bali.
Though missing out on the grand prize of US$100,000 (RM446,000), Chen and Lee were just happy to have come this far.
“We are extremely proud with the way we played the game. We wanted to play under the radar with no drama and I think we accomplished that,” they were quoted as saying by the daily.
Lee had reportedly said previously that it was an achievement to get in the final against the odds and the cynicism which had greeted their participation in the first place.
“One of the teams came up to us and told us they were surprised we were even chosen to be on the show.
“They thought we seemed weak but it isn’t just about physical strength. It’s about having brains, patience and a bit of luck.
“I even heard that several of the eliminated contestants had expected to see us drop out as the weeks progressed. But we proved them all wrong,” she had said.
However, all was forgiven as the losing teams from the previous eight episodes of the reality series all showed up to cheer all the three teams in the final.
In the final, aired on the AXN channel on Astro last night, Wilson and Shah managed to arrive first despite hailing down a taxi driver who had refused to step on the accelerator on their last race to the final pit stop.
Fortunately for them, they were still ahead at the time and made it to the finishing line, where they were greeted by The Amazing Race Asia host Allan Wu and co-host Tara Basro, an Indonesian film actress.
It hit them that they had won when they heard the hosts say: “After six countries, 12 cities and 12,000km, you are the winners of The Amazing Race Asia!”
“We still can’t believe it, I am pretty sure we will be talking about this moment for decades!” the Filipino duo said, according to NST.
Chen and Lee join three other teams from Malaysia who have made it to the finals of the reality series, which first aired its Asian version in 2007.
In season one, Malaysia’s Zabrina Fernandez and Joe Jer Tee were crowned champions, while sisters, Pamela and Vanessa Chong came out second in season two. Then, in season three, veteran actress Ida Nerina and her partner Tania Khan came third.
Though called The Amazing Race Asia, the reality show now only comprises teams from Southeasian countries.
Season five started with 11 teams, comprising three teams from Malaysia, two each from Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, and one each from Thailand and Vietnam.
There were only four all-women teams when the show started and two of them came out on tops. -FMT
