KUALA LUMPUR: Many Klang Valley residents are probably unaware that they can enjoy a cheap, fast and traffic-jam-free mode of transport, thanks to Dego Ride, the first motorcycle taxi service in Malaysia.
Dego Ride is like Indonesia’s Ojek and Thailand’s Motosai Rap Chang. It was introduced in November last year and, according to its founder Nabil Feisal Bamadhaj, the response has been overwhelming.
The fare is RM2.50 for the first 3km and 60 sen for each subsequent kilometre.
Nabil said Dego Ride ferries about 200 passengers every day, with women accounting for 70%.
Although most of the company’s 600 riders are men, Nabil said women liked the service because of its convenience.
“When women ride the motorcycles they can put their bags in the basket. They can keep their hands on their own laps.”
He also said women felt safe on the motorcycles. “If you get in a car with a man, there’s no telling what the guy can do. He could lock the car. That’s risky.”
With Dego Ride, he said, a woman could jump off the bike if the rider was up to no good.
Furthermore, the company tracks each Dego Ride through GPS to ensure nothing untoward happens.
Passengers are covered by insurance.
The company also provides for each passenger a helmet, a raincoat and a shower cap. According to Nabil, the shower cap is for reasons of hygiene.
When asked why men were less likely to use the service, Nabil said it was probably because they had their own vehicles.
“Women will save their money for other priorities,” he said. “Also we find men tend to be more inclined to borrow their friends’ motorcycles.”
Nabil said he planned to extend the service to Malacca, Johor and Penang next year.
