Najib said that apart from providing free MRT rides, the feeder bus services to and from all stations will also be provided for free until Jan 16.
MRT Corp will be providing 112 feeder buses that would begin operating on 25 routes from all 12 stations from tomorrow.
The prime minister also lauded the project for being one that had met the target completion date as well as saved the government RM2 billion on the construction cost for the first phase, that is the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) line.
“At the beginning of the project, the government had set the cost for the project at RM23 billion.
“But to this day, all the contracts have been awarded and work on the entire route is near completion, with the cost to the government coming to RM21 billion. That means, we have managed to save RM2 billion” Najib said at the launch of the MRT at the Kwasa Damansara station today.
The launch marked the completion of the 21km-long SBK line from Sungai Buloh, Selangor to the Semantan station in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur.
The second phase of the MRT project, from Semantan to Kajang, which will also include the underground section in downtown Kuala Lumpur, will be opened in July next year.
With the second phase, the MRT line from Sungai Buloh to Kajang will then cover a distance of 51km and have 31 stations. -FMT
