Cheras Umno chief Syed Ali Alhabshee has warned Gerakan leader Andy Yong that he could cause racial tension by questioning Article 153 of the Federal Constitution, which concerns bumiputera special privileges.
"The statement is truly dangerous and appears seditious that could cause tensions between Malays and non-Malays," Syed Ali said in a blog posting yesterday.
According to him, Yong's view was a “challenge” to Umno.
"The view is an insolent one and challenges Umno as a party that champions Malay and Muslim interests," Syed Ali said.
Earlier yesterday, Yong, who is Gerakan Youth deputy chief, said it was perhaps time to reconsider Article 153 of the Federal Constitution and implement a fair multiracial meritocracy assessment in the country’s social, educational and economic spheres.
This, Yong said, was because Malays were now capable of excelling in a competitive environment.
He also claimed that Article 153 had acquired an adverse reputation due to some politicians manipulating it, as well as being the legal root of racial inequalities.
However, Syed Ali said Yong's public discussion of the matter went against the spirit of solidarity in the BN ruling coalition.
"This is not good. He clearly has ill intention in questioning Article 153, which is already enshrined in the Federal Constitution, and the rights and position of Malays should not be questioned," he said.
Syed Ali called on Yong to retract the statement and not to challenge Umno.- Mkini
