UMNO AGM Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's speech at the Umno annual meet did not contain elements that can lead to a racial disaster, said Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He criticised Pakatan Harapan secretariat chief Saifuddin Abdullah for his "narrow" analysis of the speech.
Zahid stressed that Najib had only compared how unity should be created among the various races as opposed to the claim of stoking divisiveness.
Those who claimed otherwise, he said, are those who failed to translate their responsibilities into action when still being part of Umno.
"Providing antagonistic views is simple. But I am confident it is only a narrow political analysis premised on the person's disappointment," he added.
Saifuddin, a former Umno lawmaker and deputy minister, claimed that Najib committed a grave error in using racial connotations in his speech.
"No prime minister should commit such an error, which may lead to racial disaster," he said.
Saifuddin criticised Najib for portraying DAP as being anti-Malay and anti-Islam as well as creating the impression that DAP called the shots in the opposition coalition.
He accused the prime minister of playing a dangerous game of dividing the people by asking them to choose between DAP and Umno in the next general election.
"This means Najib is building a political configuration that is more extreme, a model of a Malay, bumiputera and Islamic dominance versus a non-Malay, non-bumiputera and non-Islam one.
"Najib hopes for a situation where the government is Malay, bumiputera and Islamic dominated, while the common people comprise the other races and religions," he added.- Mkini
